Discover the fascinating but little known history of the World War II Navy Base at the Salton Sea and its post-war use by the Atomic Energy Commission. Retired educator Sid Burks will share historical photographs and more! The lecture will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Cornelia White Community Room at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library (WMML) located at 100 S. Palm Canyon Dr. in downtown Palm Springs. Few people know that the Salton Sea played a major role in the development of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War II. Learn more about this little known history and see historical photographs.

Sid Burks is a retired community college teacher and administrator and he currently teaches full-time for Cal State San Bernardino. He is a serious enthusiast of military, aviation and desert history. He’s given many lectures throughout the Coachella Valley on aviation and military history.
