Ride of Silence

Bike ride will honor memory of cyclists

This ride is part of a global event, cyclists riding in silence beginning at 7 p.m. to raise public awareness of cycling safety, and to honor those we've lost and those who have been injured.

We will gather at the south parking area, with brief comments from Mayor Lisa Middleton and other public officials from around the Coachella Valley. We moved the event from Palm Desert so it will be easier for those who knew the friend we lost.

All levels of bicyclists are encouraged to join this effort.

We also encourage non-cyclists to join us. Walkers can use the one mile loop around the park, and all can show support by joining us at the brief ceremony. There is parking for those not arriving by bike.

As most of you know, we will honor a friend we lost, and another who was seriously injured in Austin a few weeks ago. While on an organized cross country tour, they were struck by a hit-and-run driver. We will also honor others we have lost in our valley and Andrew Jelmert the Aids Life Cycle rider who was recently killed by a hit-and-run driver in Griffith Park.

The Ride of Silence is held at 7:00 pm local time around the globe, the organization’s rules are simple, we will all wear helmets, stay under 12 miles per hour, not speak, and follow all laws.

Our route is less than 5 miles with the option of stopping sooner. Walkers, and families of all ages can use the sidewalk around the park.

For this Palm Springs event, we encourage all to wear red and/or white and use headlights and tail lights.

If you need help, we have volunteers who can service your bike. Just speak up!

We will be very visible.
