Desert Institute Nature Lecture: Barbara Gothard Presents

"Contradictions: Bringing The Past Forward©: African American Homesteaders in the Mojave Desert"

Join us February 7th at 6:00 pm in The Learning Center at the main library. Presented in partnership with the Desert Institute of Joshua Tree National Park."

Contradictions - Bringing The Past Forward is Gothard’s visual interpretation of the untold stories and plight of twenty three early 20th century African American homesteaders in the Mojave Desert.  The artwork series focuses on these specific Homesteaders in Lanfair/Dunbar, California and the contradictions of Gothard’s own desert-lived experience.

Barbara Gothard: From modest Illinois roots, Gothard aspires to tap into her creative potential with a contemporary art form known for exploring the subconscious mind.  She lives, works and is influenced by the ever-changing colors and majesty of the desert in the Palm Springs/Mojave Desert area.  The desert is a soft malleable and metamorphic environment surrounded by majestic mountains awash in brilliant colors.  Gothard’s artworks are symbolically autobiographical and are exhibited locally, nationally and internationally.  Her non-traditional career path zigzagged from education to global corporate leader to her art.  Her artwork continuum evolves from traditional art education, Bachelor’s Mount Mary University, Master’s Long Island University, Ph.D. Michigan State University. Her historical influencers include Hieronymus Bosch, Georgia O’Keefe, Gustav Klimt and Rene Magritte.  She is an art magazine writer and contributor whose commitment to community service is an integral part of Gothard’s life. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees, Palm Springs Art Museum and an Emeritus Member of the Artists Council, having previously served as Preside
