Lecture: Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs: Author of Tarzan presented by Scott Tracy Griffin

Join us in the Learning Center at the main library to learn more about this creator of Tarzan and his ties to the Coachella Valley.

One of the best-selling authors of the 20th Century, known for creating such immortal characters as Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs was a frequent patron at the Palm Springs Racquet Club during his 1935-36 residency and subsequent vacations. Burroughs’ life story is a rags-to-riches tale of an artist struggling to find his niche and succeeding wildly. Learn how Burroughs created a media empire that is still influencing global pop culture a century later in this entertaining slideshow discussion.

Scott Tracy Griffin is the author of Tarzan on Film (Titan Books, 2016) and Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration (Titan Books, 2012), and has written about pop culture and the film industry for three decades. He is ranked among the foremost authorities on novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, and has appeared in numerous documentaries, news programs, radio shows, and podcasts discussing Burroughs and his literary and film legacy.
