Film Screening: Mame

Film Screenings: Auntie Mame + Mame

Patrick Dennis was one of several pseudonyms of American Author Edward Everett Tanner III (b. Evanston, IL, 18 May 1921; d. New York, NY, 6 November 1976), author of sixteen satirical novels and originator of Broadway characters Mame Dennis (Auntie Mame, 1956, and Mame, 1966). His novel Auntie Mame: An irreverent escapade was one of the bestselling American books of the 20th century, selling over two million copies and stayed put on the New York Times bestseller list for 112 weeks!  Not only did his book inspire the Broadway hit Auntie Mame the play, with Rosalind Russell in the starring role, arriving on Broadway in October 1956 and ran for fifteen months. Russell then went to Hollywood to make the screen version – the highest grossing movie of 1958 receiving 6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Lead/Supporting Actress.  Although Dennis claimed Auntie Mame was a fictional character it was generally acknowledged that the character was based on his aunt, the real-life Greenwich Village eccentric Marion Tanner (March 6, 1891 — October 30, 1985) given the clear similarities to her life and relationship to her nephew.
