Christian Cooper in Conversation with Lorenzo Taylor (Theater 1)
Central park birdwatcher, comics writer, television host, science editor and proud Blerd (Black nerd) discusses his book Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World.
Christian Cooper is the author of Better Living Through Birding, his New York Times best-selling memoir, and the host and consulting producer of the National Geographic TV series Extraordinary Birder, streaming on Disney+. In his days as an editor and writer for Marvel Comics, he introduced their first lesbian character and, in the pages of Starfleet Academy, Star Trek’s first gay man, earning a GLAAD media award nomination. A lifelong birder and activist dedicated to justice for Black people, equality for queer people, and the joy of wild birds for everyone, he currently serves as a vice president of New York City Audubon and splits his time between Manhattan and Palm Springs.
Lorenzo Taylor was born in Birmingham, Alabama where he grew up with the Civil Rights Movement. He is a poet, playwright, novelist, and journalist. He retired to Palm Springs after thirty years working for the federal government in international affairs and public health. Since 2020 he has written (under his pen name of Lorenz Qatava) two gay romance/adventure novels Rain After the Fire and Mist Under the Waterfall, a volume of poetry and short stories, and two stage plays about Black gay men Speak My Words, Tell My Truth and On The Verge. He occasionally teaches courses on poetry and civil rights history for adult education programs at Southern Oregon University and at the California State University San Bernardino.
