It’s A Drag. Or Is it? —Across the Gender Spectrum in Art and Life (Theater 1)

An exploration of gender identity/ies, binary busting and drag on and off the page.


Moderated by Darya TeesewellDarya Teesewell is a retired film industry crew member who lives in Cathedral City with her wife, the desert, and some beautiful cactus. She is currently submitting a first draft of her memoir (currently titled The Pretty Ones) to a few publishers. The book is about figuring oneself out in the gender tumult of the late nineties Los Angeles club scene.

She has written in the past for Huffington Post, Fourculture Magazine and Girl Talk magazine and has read stories and poems for Strong Words and Queerwise.

 

 

 


Charlie Jane Anders (Photo credit Sarah Deragon)Charlie Jane Anders is the author of the Unstoppable trilogy: the first two books, Victories Greater Than Death and Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak, are out now, and the final book, Promises Stronger Than Darkness, came out April 11, 2023.  She’s also the author of the short story collection Even Greater Mistakes, and Never Say You Can’t Survive (August 2021), a book about how to use creative writing to get through hard times. Her other books
include The City in the Middle of the Night and All the Birds in the Sky. She’s won the Hugo, Nebula, Sturgeon, Lambda Literary, Crawford and Locus Awards. She co-created Escapade, a transgender superhero, for Marvel Comics and wrote her into the long-running New Mutants comic. And she’s currently the science fiction and fantasy book reviewer for the Washington Post. Her TED Talk, “Go Ahead, Dream About the Future” got 700,000 views in its first week. With Annalee Newitz, she co-hosts the podcast Our Opinions Are Correct.





Frank DeCaro (Photo credit Erica Berger)Frank DeCaro is the author of the 2019 Rizzoli bestseller Drag: Combing Through the Big Wigs of Show Business, and the forthcoming pop-culture history, Disco at 50. Other books include Unmistakably Mackie, The Dead Celebrity Cookbook, and the pioneering queer memoir A Boy Named Phyllis.  

A graduate of Northwestern University, DeCaro writes frequently for The New York Times and Emmy magazine. As a performer, he is best known for his 12 years as host of The Frank DeCaro Show on Sirius XM, and his six-year stint as the movie critic on The Daily Show. In addition, he spent four years playing large venues across North America as the opening act for comedian Lisa Lampanelli.


 


Jacob TobiaJacob Tobia (they/them) is an actor, writer, producer, and author of the national bestselling memoir Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story. Their work has been featured on MSNBC, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time, New York Magazine and The Guardian, among others.

 



 



Justine Pucella Winans

Justine Pucella Winans (they/she) is a queer and nonbinary writer who lives in Los Angeles with their husband and two adorable cats, Jasper and Twinklepop. Their YA debut from HarperTeen, Bianca Torres Is Afraid of Everything, was an Indies Introduce title and critically acclaimed comedic murder mystery. Their MG debut, The Otherwoods, is a spooky portal fantasy releasing September 2023 from Bloomsbury. When not writing queer, creepy, and fun fiction for kids and teens, they can be found training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, reading manga and webcomics, and actively avoiding real life scary situations.
