The Palm Springs Fire Department has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1931, originally focused on fire suppression. Over the years, it has evolved into a comprehensive emergency response organization, catering to a variety of needs within the community. Presently, the department boasts a workforce of 97 employees, with 78 firefighters stationed across the city's five fire stations.

Each day, a team of 26 firefighters is on duty, operating on 48-hour shifts to ensure continuous coverage. Among them are specialized personnel, including one fire captain and three fire engineers per shift, dedicated to providing Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the Palm Springs International Airport. This commitment extends the department's reach beyond traditional firefighting duties.

The Palm Springs Fire Department prides itself on being an all-risk emergency response force, equipped to handle a wide array of situations. From fire and rescue operations to technical and swift water rescues, the department's capabilities are extensive. Moreover, they offer services such as hazardous materials incident response and fire investigation, highlighting their commitment to public safety and well-being.

In addition to their emergency response duties, the department is actively involved in preventive measures and public outreach. Conducting fire prevention inspections, organizing educational programs, and responding to various public service calls are integral aspects of their role within the community.

Despite the evolution and expansion of services, the Palm Springs Fire Department remains dedicated to upholding a high standard of service. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their response to the 12,264 calls for service in the calendar year 2023. Equipped with state-of-the-art vehicles and staffed with highly trained personnel, the department continues to serve the public with professionalism and dedication.
