Salary and Benefits
Compressed Work Schedule
A compressed work schedule is available for many patrol and special assignment units. Officers who work on compressed schedules work the same number of hours but can have more consecutive days off, by working longer days. All assignments and schedules are four 10-hour days.
Health and Dental Plans
Excellent health and dental plans are available for Police Officers and their eligible family members/domestic partners. The City contributes to all plans.
Sick Leave and Disability Benefits
Sworn employees receive 6 days of 100 percent paid sick leave for the first 12 months, and 12 days of 100 percent sick leave annually after 12 months. Employees may accumulate up to 520 hours at 100 percent paid sick leave. Employees are eligible for a service-connected disability retirement beginning on the date of graduation from basic training.
Life Insurance
The City provides life insurance at no cost to full-time employees as follows:
For Non-Safety & Safety: $50,000

Pension Plan
The City of Palm Springs participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), to which both the employee and the City contribute.
For Non-Safety:
- First Level Miscellaneous (hired prior to 12/24/12) - 2.7% @ 55 (employee rate of 8%)
- Second Level Miscellaneous (hired after 12/24/12) - 2.0% @ 60 (employee rate of 7%)
- PEPRA New Members (hired on or after 1/1/13) - 2.0% @ 62 (employee rate of 8%)
For Safety (Police):
- First Level Police (hired before 06/17/11) - 3.0% @ 50 (employee rate of 9%)
- Second Level Police (hired on or after 06/17/11) - 3.0% @ 55 (employee rate of 9%)
- PEPRA New Police (hired on or after 1/1/13 - 2.7% @ 57 (employee rate of 12.75%)

Deferred Compensation
A deferred compensation plan is available to all employees, which provides a tax-deferred savings to serve as a retirement supplement. Employees may contribute to the City’s designated deferred compensation plans through payroll deductions, not to exceed the annual contribution limits set by the IRS.
