Staying Cool, Heat Safety Guide
Extreme heat events are becoming more and more common throughout the summer. As these events happen more often, it is important to protect yourself and your community from heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips on staying safe and cool during the hot summers:
- Stay informed about signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses (Heat Stress Related Illness | NIOSH | CDC)
- Stay informed about weather trends and plan activities accordingly. (Local Weather)
- Plan outdoor activities for the coolest times of the day such as morning, evening and night when possible.
- Take frequent breaks and limit the duration of outdoor activities during summer heat.
- Stay hydrated with water and avoid surgery, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
- Never leave children, elderly, disabled individuals or pets inside unattended vehicles.
- If you are unable to escape the heat a Cooling Center may be an option for you.
